National Chief Cindy Woodhouse, Assembly of First Nations

Janice Larocque, President Spirit Omega

I had the privilege of supporting my long-time friend, Cindy Woodhouse, in her successful election as National Chief of the Assembly of First Nations (AFN). I set up her initial social media site and strategy.  Following her election, I maintained a contract role to provide ongoing social media support.

Additionally, I contributed to the AFN Convention, where there were at 400+ Chiefs and Proxies at their 45th General Assembly in July 2024. I focused on engaging Chiefs and corporate leaders. Over 2,400 chiefs, proxies, Elders, youth, and delegates attended the event.

I had the opportunity to serve as the Campaign Manager for Jonathan during his Presidential campaigns for the SAMRU, facing strong opponents both times. Crafting a unique strategy, mobilizing dedicated volunteers, and championing grassroots policies tailored to student needs were key pillars of our approach. Departing from conventional methods, we innovated our campaign style, setting aside traditional norms to pave our distinctive path. Our focus on student-centric policies, coupled with an innovative advertising strategy that leveraged campus-wide volunteer engagement, proved instrumental in our success.

I  collaborated with my long-time colleague, Autumn EagleSpeaker, on enhancing the creative aspects of her Indigenous craft event markets. Autumn had been dedicating her time to volunteering and organizing events that showcased the exceptional arts and crafts of Indigenous artisans in Calgary and the surrounding area. I provided support by assisting in designing the logo and creating various promotional materials.

Since 2015, the quarterly craft markets have flourished under the banner of Authentically Indigenous, marking a significant milestone in our shared commitment to nurturing Indigenous art, culture, and community. It has been a rewarding journey witnessing the growth and impact of these events, contributing to the celebration and preservation of Indigenous creativity and heritage.

Late Chief Gail Strikes with a Gun, Piikani Nation, Treaty 7

Rob Symond, Chief Operating Officer of the former Husky Energy

I had the privilege of collaborating with the late Chief Gayle Strikes With a Gun, who recognized my expertise in supporting Indigenous electoral successes. Chief Strikes With a Gun, a pioneering female candidate amidst established male contenders, entrusted me with shaping her platform, campaign materials, and strategic approach. Together, we united a diverse coalition of voters, amplifying the voices of underrepresented groups such as women, students, individuals from smaller families, and urban residents. Our concerted efforts to mobilize the electorate culminated in her historic victory as the first female Chief of the Piikani Nation of the Blackfoot Confederacy, achieved on the initial ballot. Her tenure stands as a testament to the transformative power of perseverance and determination in overcoming challenges to drive meaningful change. She became a beacon for young women interested in elected leadership.

Recognizing the need for structured support for Indigenous employees and education for non-Indigenous counterparts within the company, I took the initiative to unite Indigenous individuals from diverse sectors within Husky. Together, we established the Husky Aboriginal Community Network, advocating for an executive sponsor and securing a budget. With the enthusiastic involvement of Chief Operating Officer Mr. Rob Symonds, we successfully organized quarterly events celebrating Indigenous culture and heritage.

Collaborating with similar groups in the Oil and Gas industry, we orchestrated impactful initiatives like the 'One Shoe, One Moccasin' event, engaging executives and staff members alike. Noteworthy was my participation on a panel alongside Indigenous representatives from three other Oil and Gas companies, fostering meaningful dialogue, collaboration and leadership.
